Searching HeinOnline

  • "Full Text" Tab searches across all collections > Choose databases using the search box dropdown
    • Ex: “wrongful convictions” (database: law journal library, criminal justice & criminology)
    • Refine search
    • Document tools from results page
      • Download PDF
      • Download a selected page range
      • Email PDF to friend or colleague – end user doesn’t need access to HeinOnline
      • Bookmark document
    • "Search Help" link outlines Boolean operators and other advanced search
  • "Citation" tab allows you to search with just the citation
    • Citation navigator
    • Citation format guide
      • Ex.  Search for "Harvard Law Review" journal and fill in volume and page number to directly go to that article

      • Scholar check features – checking citations to show other articles/cases that cite this case
      • Bad Law Bot = red flag to show negative treatment indicated in the case. Only the red flag
        • Bad law review cases will be listed by most recent case first
    • Search Fast Case lookup = similar to citation navigator to plug in volume/page number
    • Search by text
      • Info about the case, you don’t know case name
        • Ex: “miranda warning” AND “police custody"
          • Refine by date, jurisdiction, location/state, person/organization
      • Ability to search for a party or court abbreviation, docket number, date of a case

  • US Congressional Document database > Congressional record
    • Congressional record daily is updated every day.
    • Provide feedback to HeinOnline with ideas/features. Many features come from customer suggestions
    • Congressional Record Daily to Bound Locator
      • Enter citation or plug in a date and get links directly to the daily and to the bound.
    • Congressional Hearings > Congressional Hearings quick finder tool
      • Plug in congress, hearing, committee and search text
  • Code of Federal Regulations
    • Plug in title, part, section quick locator
    • CFR Sections affected locator
      • Let you know sections affected/amended

    • The little blue “H” icon indicates that the volume is in HeinOnline

Lauren has shared the request about updated criminal Justice manuals with the Director of Production to see if they are interested in adding more manuals, and providing your suggestion to break them down further to be discoverable.

Create a MyHein account to:

  • Bookmark documents: sort by organizational tags; add notes to the entry; export citations; email to colleague
  • Save search queries: as new content is updated, you get an email alert if a new document matches your search criteria
  • Search history: Includes filters … easily change to a saved search
  • eTOC Alerts: receive alerts when new material is added within specific journals
  • Favorite Databases: select databases you want to appear toward the top of the welcome page to move them tot eh top of the Database listings (homepage and upper right dropdown)
  • Author alerts: Connects you to author pages which include scholarly metrics of their articles, and the bell icon will setup email alert with specific authors
