Internal Database Training: Emerald

Video Recording

Notes

Goals

  • Understand type of resources available in Emerald
  • A lot in emerald that we don’t have access to
  • Typically go to Emerald Insight when looking for case studies … we don’t have a lot of case study databases (ABI Inform and Business Insights has case studies but that’s about it)
    • If there's a case study we don't have access to, use the preprint/permissions button to see options for licensing for your course, etc.

Browse our Content (button on top nav)

  • A way to see overview of types of content … not the best way to search the content
  • Books/journals - Refine by subject area lists disciplines (organized more for industries/careers)
  • Case studies – we don’t have access to most of those
    • Good to be aware that Emerald has case studies
    • Faculty could potentially get licensing to case study for their course materials if they like what they see
  • Expert Briefings – partnership with Oxford Analytica to offer “unbiased” analysis of current events. You can sign up for the briefings to receive notifications. Good for global issues and political science
  • Open Access – one of the most useful features of the database. Accessible even if people are having authentication issues, or unaffiliated with FHSU. 5,000 resources available

Advanced Search:

  • Earlycite - Available 32 business days after they’ve been accepted, so if you want super recent research check that filter
  • Not a lot of search fields available – can’t search by subject. All fields is probably your best option
  • Set access type to “Only content I have access to” since there’s a lot that we don’t have access to
  • Ex. “hotel”

Results Page:

  • Reprints and permissions button will take you to a list of types of permissions you might want and what they might cost. Lets faculty price out different types of uses (ex. if they are using for class, we could explore library linking first)
  • Open URL will take you to link resolver (in case you didn’t limit to the access that FHSU has access to)
  • Summary and Detail expands abstract and keywords. Keywords are not subject headings, it won’t do a subject search. There is no subject search in Emerald so it will only launch a keyword search so it’s only moderately helpful
  • DATE is missing from results list - The results don’t tell you when they were published (you can set the date filter on sidebar though)
    • Can download multiple RIS files at once from results page
  • Content type
    • Article/earlycite article
    • Book part
      • PDF or epub (epubs don’t expire since it’s only a book chapter)
      • Book chapters/TOC are listed on right side
      • No way to search for entire books except the browse feature.
      • If there’s a book series you’re interested in, there’s a list of book series/serials
      • TOC alert for book series too.
    • Case study
      • Summary, case, etc.
      • Teaching notes section – contact us link at the bottom > customer support > search for teaching notes > link to help documentation
        • Must register a profile on emerald platform and must contact emerald support to verify they are faculty/teaching staff
    • Graphical analysis
      • No way to search directly for graphic analysis.
      • Infographics with annotations, below describes what an infographic means

Article level view:

  • Breadcrumbs at top are helpful to see what other articles were published in that issue/volume of the journal.
  • Dropdown next to author shows author affiliations
  • Open URL goes to Link Resolver if we don’t have access in Emerald.
  • PDF just launches to default PDF browser, so no special tools/features like cite/etc.
  • Citation is listed at the bottom, no listing of citation styles to choose from
    • Can download .RIS citation file to open in Zotero, Mendeley, etc. to plug in and translate to other citation styles

Journal level view:

  • Journal page will list special issues and titles of the special issues, right column will list any journal renames, dates available
  • Subscribe to table of contents alerts or via RSS alerts. Can do this for journals that we don’t have full text of
  • Information for authors seeking publication in the journal.
  • Altmetrics are listed for select articles which tell us traditional citations and Twitter/Mendeley (see sidebar for more info and end of video)

Altmetric

Near the end of the video, Claire addresses Altmetric in more detail. Altmetric is incorporated into some of the search results in Emerald and helps track impact on non-traditional sources (news, social media, etc.)

Altmetric has a “For Researchers” section of their website – if you’re an author, you can use their various tools:

  • Altmetric bookmarket - install on browser to tell you if any article you visit has altmetrics available. Article needs to have DOI, hit and miss.
  • Tracks traditional citations (only with articles that have a DOI)
  • Altmetric badges – if you’re an author, you can download the badge for your work for personal website, etc.
  • Altmetric API  – you need programming knowledge
