Apps for Free Audiobooks

The apps below are available for iOS and/or Android devices and provide their own collection of free audiobook titles.

E-book Formats

Ebook Formats

There are many different formats that you will come across as you access e-books. Here are some of the more common ones:

epub file type ePUB a free and open-source e-book publishing platform that is used by many vendors for e-books (Electronic Publishing)
PDF file type PDF a document exchange that was created by Adobe Systems - you must use a specialized reader, Adobe Acrobat, to read a file (Portable Document Format)
azw amazon kindle file type AZW a proprietary Kindle format. Can only be used on Kindle products (Amazon)
ACSM file type means that you need adobe digital editions required to open ACSM An Adobe Content Server Message file can only be opened using Adobe Digital Editions to activate and download Adobe DRM protected content. (Learn more about ACSM files)

Audiobook Formats

Audiobooks are also available directly through mobile apps, on CD, and occasionally available via video.

MP3 file type icon MP3 MP3 is the name of the file extension and also the name of the type of file for MPEG.
aaw audible audiobook format AAX Audiobook format, which is a variable-bitrate (allowing high quality) M4B file encrypted with DRM. AAX file format is created by Audible.
M4p file type M4P A version of audio file with proprietary Digital Rights Management (Fairplay DRM) developed by Apple for use in music downloaded from their iTunes Music Store.
