Describes best practices for linking to resources in library databases.

Permalinking to Gale Resources

By default, address bar URLs in Gale databases look something like this:

https://go.gale.com/ps/retrieve.do?tabID=Journals&resultListType=RESULT_LIST&searchResultsType=SingleTab&searchType=TopicSearchForm&currentPosition=1&docId=GALE%7CA605799600&docType=Article&sort=Relevance&contentSegment=ZXAY-MOD1&prodId=OVIC&contentSet=GALE%7CA605799600&topicId=CVXOUS126763018&searchId=&userGroupName=klnb_fhsuniv&inPS=true

This link contains lots of information that is specific to your search session. It will not work later.

However, every page in a Gale database, whether it is a topic page, article record, or journal record, has a "get link" option in the upper right-hand corner:

When you click that button, you'll get a much shorter, tidier link that looks like this:

https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A605799600/OVIC?u=klnb_fhsuniv&sid=OVIC&xid=362d87bc

This link contains information specifying that it is for FHSU users (u=lkmb_fhsuuniv) and should prompt the user to log in with FHSU credentials. However, to be safe, it's still best to add the proxy prefix, like so:

http://ezproxy.fhsu.edu:2048/login?url=https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A605799600/OVIC?u=klnb_fhsuniv&sid=OVIC&xid=362d87bc

Now this link is ready to use!
