Special Education History Background Information Resources

These background resources are not peer-reviewed but are encyclopedias and other reference resources you can use to learn key topics and find peer-reviewed articles. 

Finding articles by decade

When you need information from a certain time period, decade, or year, filter your search results by Publication Year. Here are three ways to do that using Forsyth Library's catalog and two of our Education databases. 

Search Everything by Publication Year

  • Enter your search terms in the Search Everything box. For example: Special Educators
  • Click Search
  • Use the Filter Results sidebar on the right to narrow down your results.
  • Under Show Only
    • Choose Full Text Online
  • Under Show Only
    • Choose Peer-reviewed Journals
  • Change the Publication Date to: 1970-1989
    • Click Apply Filters

Education Source by Publication Year

  • Education Source opens on the Advanced Search. In boxes, enter your search term(s).
    • For example: special education (in the first search box) AND learning environment (in the second search box)
  • Use the Refine Results sidebar on the left to narrow down the results.
  • Under Limit To
    • Choose Full Text
  • Under Limit To
    • Choose Peer Reviewed
  • Change the Publication Date From to 1970
  • Change the Publication Date To to 1989

ERIC (Proquest) by Publication Year

  • ERIC via Proquest opens a basic search. Click on Advanced Search (above the search bar)
  • Enter your search terms. For example: special education AND family
  • Click Search
  • Use the sidebar on the left-hand side to refine the results.
  • Limit to: Peer reviewed
  • Source Type: Scholarly Journals
  • Publication Date:
    • Use the slider to choose 1970-1989
    • Click Update
