Tips for Conducting Personal Interviews with Local Businesses

  • Research the business and the person you are interviewing before the interview
  • Create open-ended questions to ask
  • Stay on the topic but allow time to ask follow-up questions
  • Take detailed notes or record the interview
  • Send a thank-you note or email after the interview
  • Properly cite the information you learned in the interview:

A personal interview, whether in person, online, or via email, is considered personal communication and should be cited in-text, but does not require a citation in your reference list. 

(First Initial. Last Name, personal communication, Month Day, Year).

Example:
