Interlibrary Loan

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service provided to FHSU faculty, staff, and students. If you need a book, article or other item to which Forsyth Library does not have access, you can use ILL to request it from another library.

What can be borrowed?
Journal articles (both print and digital), print books, audiovisual materials, microforms, theses and dissertations.

What cannot be borrowed?
Textbooks, E-Books, some reference works such as encyclopedias.

Online Students
As an online student, you can use ILL to request items physically located at Forsyth Library to be mailed to you. You can also use ILL to borrow electronic or physical materials from other libraries. Physical items will be mailed to your personal address but you are responsible for paying return shipping.

View the examples in the box below of instances when you should use ILL.

How to Use ILL

  1. Create an Account If this is your first time using Interlibrary Loan, you'll need to create an account. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "First Time Users Click Here" to complete the account registration form.
  2.  Login Once you have an account, use your ILL username and password (this is not linked to your TigerNetID) to login. If you forget your username or password, please contact the Interlibrary Loan office at 785-628-4351.
  3. Select the Type of Item Using the left sidebar menu, under "New Request", select the type of item you want to display the correct request form
  4. Complete the Form To the best of your ability, complete the form with as much information as you know about the desired item, including the author, title, publication date, etc. You can either copy and paste this information over from your search results page. Or automatically fill in the form fields by clicking the "Not available? Request from Interlibrary Loan" link from the library catalog results.
  5. Wait This varies by item. Articles can usually be sent to you electronically and arrive quickly (2-5 days). Physical items take longer (7-10+ days). We strive to fill all requests in the shortest time possible. But if you need the article for a paper that is due in a day or two, you may not receive it in time.
  6. Watch for a Notification That Your Item is Ready For books and other physical items, you’ll receive an email when your ILLiad request is available for pick-up at the Learning Commons Desk. For articles and electronically delivered items, you’ll receive an email when the item is ready to download from the ILL dashboard.

Tips for Completing ILL Request Form

Below are a few tips for completing the ILL Request Form.

Examples When You Should Use ILL

Example 1:

When searching the library's catalog, the citation you find has no link to the "full-text" of an article, book chapter or other item.

No link to full text - ILL example

Example 2:

When searching the databases, instead of a full-text link, the link for an article says "Find it at Forsyth". When you click "Find it at Forsyth" you discover that the database was referring to an article where no full text is available (like example #1).

Example 3:

An article you found online requires payment, and you have checked with a librarian to be sure we do not have access through the library.

Payment required - ILL example

Example 4:

You are an online student and need a book that is located at Forsyth Library mailed to you.

World Cat

As you search for articles and resources for your research project, you may run into abstracts or search results that DO NOT take you to the full-text of an article. In that case, you can either copy and paste the bibliographic information into the Interlibrary Loan form or you can look up that resource on the WorldCat database to submit an ILL request through there.
