It is meant to be a preview of the longer paper or presentation because it helps readers understand what main themes are discussed helping them determine whether or not to view the full project. Think of an abstract as a movie trailer.
Abstracts should be able to make sense to the reader independent of your final paper or presentation, it's important to communicate your key ideas in the abstract for those who don't have time to read your paper or view your presentation. Abstracts also give a glimpse into the organization of your paper or project (often following scientific paper sections of the introduction, method, results, discussion).
