Evaluating Information with SIFT

A guide to using SIFT and lateral reading to evaluate sources

There are many methods for critically considering information resources. One is Mike Caulfield's SIFT Method.

The SIFT method is especially helpful when evaluating online information from popular (not scholarly) sources.

The four moves: Stop, Investigate the source, find better coverage, trace the original context.

S: Stop

I: Investigate the source

F: Find better coverage

T: Trace to the original context

Why use SIFT?

SIFT helps you evaluate the credibility of an information resource. Is it worthy of your attention?

SIFT works best with websites, news stories, and social media content.
