FAQ About Sources

Frequently Asked Questions about Sources

Q: Can I use non-scholarly sources/popular sources?

A: You will occasionally find non-scholarly sources that can support your arguments, but remember that the assignment requirements tell you that you can only have two non-scholarly sources. If the source you're looking at doesn't have an author listed, and doesn't have any sources cited, try to find something more substantial.

Q: Are there any types of sources I can't use?

A: Things like general reference works, encyclopedias, book reviews, and brief pieces with little or no information about who wrote the information or where it came from, are not appropriate for graduate level research. These things can help you grow your understanding of your topic and can help you hone in on what you're really looking for, but they wouldn't be used as citations in a formal paper.
